About Us

Long, long ago there lived a dog, and her name was Shelby. She was a gift we picked up at the
Minneapolis airport. She became a special part of our family and brought a new layer of fun. 

Shelby loved the snows of Minnesota, loved camping with our family, loved playing with our children, would retrieve a ball without end, and thoroughly enjoyed swimming. When we moved to Indiana, Shelby went with us. When we moved to the country, Shelby moved again. She was a good dog, and she was ours.
That’s when the dream that began long ago became even stronger. As we drove the country miles from college to hometown, we dreamed of living in the country, rebuilding an old house, raising children, and having retrievers. A simple dream, not very fancy. Amazing when a dream comes true.
Shelby lived a good, long life and we were grateful for it. Because of her, we wanted other families to have the fun we had with a good dog, a gentle friend, a loving companion. Long, long ago there lived a dog, and her name was Shelby. She was a gift, a special part of our family, a new layer of fun.
Then after moving to our 43 acre farm in 1995 we started our breeding journey by acquiring a dark red Golden retriever names Elaina and a cute black Labrador named Abby. Our original plan was to breed both Goldens and lab’s but while Elina turned out to be an awesome example of the Golden breed, Abby on the other hand while being a great dog, was not a quality breeding dog. So we dropped our goal of raising both breeds and focused exquisvly on Golden Retreivers. Elaina was an awesome example of the breed, – incredible feathering, big blocky head and great composition. Elaina gave us multiple litters of wonderful Golden puppies and because the foundation of the Riversbend line. She lived to the ripe old age of 13 years old before her peaceful death. Because God blessed us with a very high quality dog in Elaina, we have built the Riversbend line on her. For 30 years, EVERY female dog in our breeding program is directly related to Elaina, meaning we have always stayed within our line for the female goldens that we have put in our program. That fact has given us a fantastic record on health tracking for our puppies. And because of that we are able to offer a 10 year genetic health guarantee on every puppy that leaves our kennel.

I am Jim Ellis, “The Head Pooper Scooper”, Founder, and Owner of Riversbend Kennel. At Riversbend, we have been breeding elite quality Golden Retrievers and Golden Doodles for 30 years. After a 33 year career in sales at General Mills Inc., and 6 years as a licensed relator, I am now semi-retired and able to devote all of my time to our breeding business. I am a father of 3, grandfather of 8 and have been married to my wife Jill for 46 years.

    Riversbend kennel was the absolute best I would give them a 5 out of 5. They were very easy to work with and let us come out as many times to play and meet the pups until we made up our minds . The puppies and the older dogs are so loved and taken care of out there . There family to the owners not just animals and you can tell how the puppies were taken care of. They were also always so clean and there bedding and space was always clean too and you can tell the puppies were loved on and got a lot of socialization. We also got a clean report from the vet saying our dog was from a healthy breed and he checked our perfect . 2 years later our Moose is still perfect!! Riversbend is definitely the best breeder around !

    I’ve gotten two Golden Retrievers from there. Max was a blond male born in 2009❤️. Presently, I have Kiefer, a 4-year-old red male that joined the family in 2021. ❤️
